HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION IS DONE PERIODICALLY
LATEX PAINT IS NOT COLLECTED AT THESE COLLECTIONS – BELOW ARE SOME IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO WITH LATEX PAINT.
Latex paint can last up to 10 years, if it hasn’t beenfrozen and thawed repeatedly and mixes up when stirred. You can test it bymaking sure there are no lumps in the paint by brushing it on a newspaper. Ifyou do not want to keep the small cans of paint, consider donating it to alocal group that may use it for theatre presentations, etc.
OTHER WAYS TO DISPOSE OF LATEX PAINT:
For Small Quantities of paint – remove thelid and let the paint dry in the can. Stir it frequently for faster drying.
For Large Quantities of paint –
Brush paint in layers onnewspaper or cardboard
Pour about 1 inch layers ofpaint into a cardboard box lined with plastic and allow paint to dry one layerat a time.
Mix paint with “kittylitter”, sawdust or sand in a cardboard box lined with plastic. Then let theleftover paint dry.
THROW THE DRIED PAINT, BOXES, NEWSPAPER, KITTY LITTER, ETC INTHE TRASH. THE PAINT CAN BE DISPOSED IN THE TRASH IF THE LID IS OFF SO THAT ITIS KNOWN THAT IT IS NOT LIQUID.
Here are some fall plantingpointers that are environmentally friendly and help keep our water clean.
Compost the leaves- Rakeleaves into a corner of your yard and leave them until next fall. During theyear, leaves will decompose into a crunchy mulch you can use to insulateflowerbeds or improve soil texture.
Fertilizeorganically – prepare your soil for next year by adding organic, slow-releasefertilizers that will enhance soil over time.
Plant treesand gauge your garden – Choose trees native to our area as well as thosethat are drought and pest resistant as well as grown in any kind of soil. Replace garden plants with plants that do not
