LATEX PAINT IS NOT COLLECTED AT
THESE COLLECTIONS – BELOW ARE SOME IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO WITH LATEX PAINT.
Latex paint can last up to 10 years, if it hasn’t been
frozen and thawed repeatedly and mixes up when stirred. You can test it by
making sure there are no lumps in the paint by brushing it on a newspaper. If
you do not want to keep the small cans of paint, consider donating it to a
local group that may use it for theatre presentations, etc.
OTHER WAYS TO DISPOSE OF LATEX PAINT:
For Small Quantities of paint – remove the
lid and let the paint dry in the can. Stir it frequently for faster drying.
For Large Quantities of paint –
Brush paint in layers on
newspaper or cardboard
Pour about 1 inch layers of
paint into a cardboard box lined with plastic and allow paint to dry one layer
at a time.
Mix paint with “kitty
litter”, sawdust or sand in a cardboard box lined with plastic. Then let the
leftover paint dry.
THROW THE DRIED PAINT, BOXES, NEWSPAPER, KITTY LITTER, ETC IN
THE TRASH. THE PAINT CAN BE DISPOSED IN THE TRASH IF THE LID IS OFF SO THAT IT
IS KNOWN THAT IT IS NOT LIQUID.
Here are some fall planting
pointers that are environmentally friendly and help keep our water clean.
Compost the leaves- Rake
leaves into a corner of your yard and leave them until next fall. During the
year, leaves will decompose into a crunchy mulch you can use to insulate
flowerbeds or improve soil texture.
Fertilize
organically – prepare your soil for next year by adding organic, slow-release
fertilizers that will enhance soil over time.
Plant trees
and gauge your garden – Choose trees native to our area as well as those
that are drought and pest resistant as well as grown in any kind of soil.
Replace garden plants with plants that do not
